Achieving your health goals doesn’t need to be an uphill battle. It can be daunting diving into a new regime of healthy eating for weight loss, to gain energy or just to lead a healthier lifestyle, but these tips could make it a little easier to achieve what you want.
#1. Write down your goals
It’s scientific fact that writing down your goals makes you more likely to achieve them. A study proved that people who describe their goals in writing are at least1.2 times more likely to achieve their goals than people who don’t - that’s pretty impressive for just writing something down!
It’s also important to place your written goals somewhere you’ll often see them like on your computer screen at work, on the fridge, next to the kettle, or set it as your phone screensaver. Also, remember to make your health goals S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-Limited). Here’s an example of a SMART weight loss goal: “I want to lose at least 0.5kg per week for 10 weeks. I will achieve this by signing up to a 10-week weight loss plan, to get healthy meals delivered, and by exercising for 45 minutes, four times per week.”
#2. Make visual reminders
Need to remember to take your weight loss meals to work for lunch? Stick a post-it note reminder on your car keys. Want to go for a walk at lunch time? Set an appointment in your email calendar and invite a workmate to keep you accountable. Want to motivate yourself to change into your gym gear? Pack your gym bag the night before and put it somewhere where you’ll physically trip over it before you forget it!
#3. Plan your meals
You don’t want any excuses for eating something you’ll regret later, so it’s important to plan what you’re going to eat before you get too hungry to care! It’s like the famous saying goes, “a goal without a plan is just a wish”, so prepare your meals ahead of time. The night before, have your breakfast and lunch ready to eat on the go, or to eat later. #4. Ask for support
When we don’t ask for help, we put ourselves at risk of either, overdoing it and giving up because of exhaustion, or not doing enough to achieve our goals. Maybe you need to some meal ideas, direction for your workout routine, or just want some spare time to get your life in order, there’s no harm in asking for support from friends, family or professionals. Even something as simple as having healthy diet meals delivered every week can give you the confidence that you’re going to eat healthy without having to spend hours grocery shopping and cooking.
#5. Allow yourself some treats
You’re only human, so you need positive reinforcement when you do good things! Rather than feeling deprived of eating, drinking or doing certain things you love, you should allow yourself these things as treats to keep you motivated. If you restrict things you love too much you may risk binging on them, which will set you back from reaching your health or weight loss goals sooner.
#6. Be kind to yourself
Don’t beat yourself up if you slip up! Because, guess what? It’s not the end of the world. You just need to get back on that horse and keep heading towards your goal. Who cares if you ate too much dessert that one night last week? Dwelling on it isn’t going to get you closer to your health goals, but your actions will.
Lastly, it can be easy to forget to not to take ourselves too seriously, so enjoy living your new healthier life and remember to celebrate your little wins towards your health or weight loss goals!
